About
JoyArt is an intercollegiate game art competition and showcase event designed to network students with industry professionals in the Boston game development scene. This event is being run as a revival of Becker College’s JoyArt, with the permission of that event’s founders.
Prizes
Overall Winner
The overall JoyArt winner decided by a panel of judges made up of industry professionals at the JoyArt event and will be given $250 in prize money. Prize payouts may not be immediate will require validation through WPI IMGD.
Character Concept Art
Concept art for game characters originally designed by the artist. Submission should either be one character or a set of characters designed to fit together. Artwork depicting copyrighted IPs and protected characters will not be accepted for this category; we are looking for strong original character designs. Prize payouts may not be immediate will require validation through WPI IMGD.
Environment Concept Art
Concept art for game environments and scenes originally designed by the artist. Artwork depicting environments from copyrighted IPs will not be accepted for this category; we are looking for strong original environment designs. Prize payouts may not be immediate will require validation through WPI IMGD.
3D Character Art
3D models of game characters, which may be textured. No expectation or requirement of original character designs for this category; judgments shall be made based on artists’ technical ability to generate game-ready models. Prize payouts may not be immediate will require validation through WPI IMGD.
3D Environment & Prop Art
3D models of game environments and props, which may be textured. No expectation or requirement of original environment or prop design for this category; judgments shall be made based on artists’ technical ability to generate game-ready models. Prize payouts may not be immediate will require validation through WPI IMGD.
2D Animation
2D animations, including animated characters, environments, cutscenes, or cinematics that might be used in a game. No expectations or requirements for the length of animations. Prize payouts may not be immediate will require validation through WPI IMGD.
3D Animation
3D animations, including animated characters, environments, cutscenes, or cinematics that might be used in a game. No expectations or requirements for the length of animations. Prize payouts may not be immediate will require validation through WPI IMGD.
Pixel Art
Pixel art of any format may be submitted to this category, including but not limited to: sprite sheets, character art, environment art, animated cinematics, etc. This catch-all category serves to allow pixel artists to demonstrate their abilities, regardless of the format. Prize payouts may not be immediate will require validation through WPI IMGD.
In-Game Art Implementation
This category serves to evaluate how artwork is implemented within a game; polished demo scenes, in-engine art tests, and completed games are all acceptable submissions to this category.
Due to the team nature of game development, we allow up to three artists to submit under a single Game Implementation work. We ask that all criteria still apply to the student artist submitting the piece.
